Chimney Cap Installations

chimney-caps1Chimney Caps are also known as Rain Covers or Spark Arrestors.
Chimney caps are necessary because the cap provides protection keeping rain, sleet and snow from entering into your home through your chimney. A chimney without a cap is like a house without a roof.

During rainstorms, water runs down the chimney and seeps into bricks and mortar, settling behind the firebricks. There is little air circulation in the chimney (unless your using it) and no sunlight, so the inside of the chimney stays wet long after the rain stops. This moisture erodes the mortar joints and weakens the brick. Add to this a freeze/thaw cycle during the cold months, and you have all the ingredients for a deteriorating chimney.

The homeowner, may not see the damage happening, but without a properly installed cap, your chimney and fireplace may be slowly deteriorating. This is a particularly important consideration if you have a metal firebox incorporating a metal damper and smoke shelf. All fireplace dampers made of metal are subject to this deterioration as the water mixes with creosote and mild acids are formed. Even chimneys serving wood stoves are in need of a chimney cover.

A chimney cap also prevents animals and birds from entering the chimney and building nests. In addition, a properly installed chimney cap also keeps out leaves, twigs, and other debris which could lead to a blockage or chimney fire. It helps to eliminate wind induced down drafts and keeps sparks from leaving the chimney and igniting nearby combustibles.

Chimney caps are made from a variety of materials. The Chimney Department uses only high quality stainless steel chimney caps. Although other materials are used for caps, such as galvanized metal, years of experience have shown us that stainless steel is the most durable and the best cap available. Caps made of stainless steel last longer than those made of regular galvanized metal. Spending a little extra for a good quality chimney cap will be money well spent and there will be no danger of rust staining the chimney.

The Chimney Department offers a lifetime warranty on all our stainless steel caps.

The Chimney Department also offers a wide variety of clay chimney pots for a more decorative look. Contact us today for more information on chimney cap or clay chimney pot installations. Our service team is always ready to answer your questions.
